Our mission is to promote the legacy of Jean-Baptiste Pointe DuSable, founder of Chicago, through educational and cultural activities. Since its creation in August 2002, DHA has welcomed individuals from diverse backgrounds with an interest in the life of DuSable, including the history and culture pertaining to the early settlement of the American Midwest.
Jean Baptiste Pointe Dusable is regarded as the first permanent non-native settler of what would later become Chicago, Illinois. Recognized as the city’s founder, the site where he settled near the mouth of the Chicago River around the 1780s is memorialized as a National Historic Landmark, now located in Pioneer Court.
DuSable Heritage Association has worked over the years with the Chicago Park District and the DuSable Park Coalition in planning the future DuSablePark near Navy Pier, where the Chicago River meets Lake Michigan, close to DuSable’s original home.
